Abrasives can be classified as
1. Bonded abrasives and
2. Coated abrasives.
(A) Bonded abrasives
Bonded abrasives are largely used in precision applications like lapping, honing, super finishing, race grinding, thread grinding, fluting, OD grinding, ID grinding, surface grinding, etc.
Further, bonded abrasives also find application in rough applications like snagging, tool sharpening, burr removal, abrasive parting off, weld preparation, etc.
Bonded abrasives are used in auto and auto ancillaries, steel, foundry, bearings, cutting tools / hand tools, housing work and construction and also in fabrication.
Broadly, there are two major producers of abrasives (1) Carborundum Universal and (2) Grindwel Norton. However, a large number of small players domestically combined with many foreign players, especially from Europe and Japan are now establishing marketing networks to service, especially precision grinding market in India.
(B). Coated abrasive
Coated abrasive products are basically engineering composites which consist of backing, bond system and abrasive grains. The products are designed for material removal and surface generation.
Generally, backing type coated abrasives are based on paper, cloth, polyester and polyester film. The bond coated abrasives are either resin based or glue based, and in some cases a combination of both.
Coated abrasives are applied in primary automotive, auto ancillaries, auto after markets, non automotive castings and forgings, metal fabrication, furniture, decorative market, plywood, man made boards, laminates, glass & ceramics, leather, steel manufacturing etc.
